Canadian Pop Singer Gets Candid About Her Up-And-Coming Career And Future
By Alyssia Rubertucci
The chart-topping, Montreal-born, VAN, is opening up about her life experiences and achievements in the music industry at 18 years old.
How did you get started and become passionate about music?
“My dad really loves music. I remember growing up, even when I was just a little girl, I remember him playing guitar all the time. Mom would always jam out to music when she was cleaning the house. There was always a lot of music in my house.
I’ve been singing since I was seven years old. One day, my dad went to this little shop for his guitar. The worker there was a singing teacher, and my dad knew I was passionate about singing – I was always singing, even in the car. So he asked her if I can take singing lessons with her. That’s when I started. Ever since then I haven’t stopped.
What has it been like to have your debut song Lock My Love Down make it up the Canadian charts?
“I never thought I would be able to be on the radio. I never pictured it that way when I was growing up, it was always something that I just loved to do. But hearing myself on the radio is insane. I’ll be driving home and I’ll hear myself and it’s still like a dream.
The song started playing in September when it won the iHeart Radio Future Star for Virgin Radio. I’m very happy and very proud it’s been able to be out that long.
Tell us about your upcoming album your latest single A-OK and the release of your album Lost Paradise.
“My album is supposed to be coming out in early summer. We have it planned for the beginning of summer. I’m really excited because it’s perfect timing – it’s definitely an album I see being played more in the summer.
My song A-OK is coming out. It’s really a cool song. It’s about my girl best friend stealing my guy. I think a lot of girls can connect to that.
You’ve already done so much at a young age, where do you see yourself in the next couple of years?
“It’s a hard question to answer, I don’t know where life can take me. I’m always going to be singing. Definitely putting out songs that people enjoy. I want to start writing more music and coming out with my own material that I’ve written. I’m really excited about that and just doing what I love. And being healthy and happy.
