5 Hart Trophy Candidates

5. Sidney Crosby

Two time hart trophy winner Sidney Crosby is making his case for why he should win the award. Crosby has led his team to the 6th spot in the eastern conference and is 4th in the league in scoring. The Captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins has surged especially as of late as he has scored 22 points in his last 11 games while his team has gone 7-2-2 in that span getting 16 out of a possible 22 points.

4. Alex Ovechkin

In 66 games played, Ovechkin has a league leading 46 goals and is on pace to have the most goals since Steven Stamkos who had 60 in the 2011-12 season. Ovechkin is also on track to win his 6th Rocket Richard Trophy in the last 7 years. Not only is he having individual success, his Washington Capitals are the 4th in the Eastern Conference and are only trailing the Bruins who are in 2nd place by 6 points.

3. Johnny Gaudreau

Gaudreau has had a spectacular season leading the Calgary Flames with 84 points in 68 games he is also tied for 8th in the league in assists with 54. Gaudreau has helped the Flames who have no clear cut number 1 goalie to 1st place in the western conference and second overall in the league. Gaudreau and the Flames recently went on a 7 game winning streak which was only snapped March 2nd by the Minnesota Wild. Don’t be surprised if the Flames start going on a win streak again and Gaudreau is at the centre of it.

2. Patrick Kane

If not for a sensational season by Nikita Kucherov, Patrick Kane would be the leading Hart Trophy Candidate. Kane has given life to a dormant Chicago Blackhawks team who were in desperate need of it. The Blackhawks are currently in 12th place in the Western Conference but are only 9 points behind the 8th seed. Kane in the meanwhile is second in scoring with 96 points, tied for 2nd in goals with 40 and tied for 6th in assists with 56.

1. Nikita Kucherov

The unquestioned leading candidate for the Hart Trophy this season has to be Nikita Kucherov who in 68 games has 108 points and is on pace to have the most points in a season since Sidney Crosby who had 120 points in the 2006-07 season. Not only is he leading the league in scoring and assists (77) but the Tampa Bay Lightning are the number one team in the league and are ahead of the second place team by 15 points.
